BMI = weight(kg) ÷ height(m)²

70 ÷ 1.70² = 24.2

BMI screens populations; it does not measure body fat. Muscular people read high — check body fat % too.

Body Mass Index (BMI) is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. It sorts adults into underweight, healthy, overweight, and obese ranges.

This calculator adds your healthy weight range and an ideal weight estimate. BMI screens for risk but does not measure body fat directly.

How to calculate BMI

To calculate BMI, divide weight in kilograms by height in metres squared. The healthy band is 18.5–24.9.

Worked example: 68 kg ÷ (1.65 m)² = 68 ÷ 2.72 = 25.0.

Frequently asked questions

A BMI of 18.5–24.9 is the healthy range. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese.

No. Muscle weighs more than fat, so muscular people often read overweight despite low body fat. Pair BMI with a body fat measurement.

Ideal weight depends on height and frame. The Devine formula gives a clinical estimate; the healthy BMI range gives a realistic band.

Results are estimates based on population averages and are not medical advice. Consult a doctor or registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) before making large changes to your diet, especially for deficits over 2 lb (0.9 kg) per week, during pregnancy or nursing, or for anyone under 18.
